#103 What is Needed to Double Your Stocking Rate Again | Qué se necesita para duplicar otra vez la carga animal

Do you want to be the best at what you do? It is very commendable to try to be the best possible in what you do, and if your passion is your livestock farm, I suggest that you not only compare yourself with the worst but also compare yourself with the best in the world.

Let me explain, when I played basketball in high school we were the champions in our city of almost a million people. But, when we went out to play in other states we quickly saw that we were not the best. So I decided to try to be the best in the world in what I am most passionate about, and that is helping ranchers maximize their profitability and the improvement of their land.

I have learned that when I help someone improve their profitability and maximize it, I also learn and it is very satisfying for me. But, I don't want them to stay there, sitting on their laurels, I want them to seek to be the best, not only in their community or geographic area but in the world.

Many will tell me, my environment is very difficult, and I cannot achieve the weight gains, age at first calving, and field fertility that they achieve in higher latitudes or at higher altitudes with higher quality pastures. And that is true if we only consider performance per animal, but we must consider profitability per hectare! That counts, and even more so the profitability or return on investment. This anyone understands.

In that, in the profitability per hectare or return on investment, is where the total grazing program shines over the other programs or grazing styles.

What is needed to double the stocking rate on any style of selective rotation grazing? Selective rotational grazing achieves progress or improvement over continuous or conventional grazing, yes, but the result can be greatly improved if we advance to the next stage; the total grazing program.

In the total grazing program, we begin by knowing how long-lived organic matter is actually created in our soil.

Long-lived organic matter is created by an exudate, a high-energy liquid that the plant returns to the soil through its roots to feed soil life. Then, these soil microbes fed by that high-energy liquid that the plant gives them make the soil nutrients available for the plant. So far so good, we now know that this very important long-lived organic matter is created with the bodies of these soil microbes, up to 80% of this long-lived organic matter is created in this way and NOT by plant residues, how It was believed until about 9 years ago.

So could we believe that we can increase the content of long-lived organic matter with rotational grazing? Unfortunately no, with rotational grazing we will only create short-lived organic matter, which lasts a few months or years but does not last up to 100 years in the soil like long-lived organic matter.

To form long-lived organic matter, these soil microbes need to be fat, yes fat, and that only happens when the exudates returned by the grassroots to the soil are fatty instead of sugary.

Interesting, right?

Well, when are fatty exudates created in your pastures?

Only when you defer them to use them as standing hay in the dry or cold season of the year!

That is one of the big differences between the total grazing program with other grazing systems, Voisin, rotational, AMP, intensive grazing management, etc., all these systems with different names do the same thing: selective grazing

Now, to the most important thing.

How come we typically double the number of productive animals in the first year compared to a rotational selective grazing system?

Due to the high harvest efficiency when grazing grass that has recovered sufficiently.

Yes, in the world there are only two styles of grazing: non-selective and selective.

Selective grazing gives you a much lower harvest efficiency, right?

Suppose that under a selective rotational grazing system, you have managed to double your animal load compared to the worst grazing system in the world, conventional continuous grazing. Now, if you want to double the number of productive animals on your farm, maintained at a low cost, pay close attention.

Thanks to the greater harvest efficiency of non-selective grazing on sufficiently recovered plants we can increase the animal load quickly, or we can save on hay or silage immediately, the decision is made by each owner of his farm.

So, summing up; In the total grazing program we can double the animal load on your farm, compared to a selective rotational grazing system, we can create more long-lived organic matter in your soil, this is the true fertility of the soil, and lasts up to 100 years in soil.

It is also important to point out that we achieved this at a very low cost, essentially with proper management, and without too much work because I like to do things simply and in the most efficient way possible.

Now, if you are doing continuous or conventional grazing you will be interested in knowing that normally we can increase the stocking rate 2 to 3 times quickly and four times in about 3-4 years depending on your environment.

In arid areas, the improvement is even greater, up to 10-15 times more animal load, but it takes a little longer depending on the rainfall each year, which varies greatly in arid and semi-arid areas.

And since it takes a while to build the minimum and flexible infrastructure, due to the size of a farm in an arid or semi-arid area, progress would not be as fast as if the infrastructure was already in place if it had a grazing system already installed. It is much easier to start with an already installed grazing system and only implement the total grazing program to begin to increase the stocking rate, save on supplemental hay or silage, and improve the soil much faster with greater creation of long-term organic matter. life which is the true fertility of our soils.

Hola, espero estén muy bien y gozando de esté día, un día más qué Dios nos da para disfrutarlo y dejar un mundo mejor qué el qué recibimos.

Quieres ser el mejor en lo qué haces? Es muy loable el intentar ser lo mejor posible en lo qué haces, y si tu pasion es tu finca ganadera te sugiero qué no solamente te compares con los peores si no qué te compares con los mejores del mundo.

Te explico, cuando jugaba basketball en la preparatoria eramos los campeones en nuestra ciudad de casi un millon de gentes. Pero, cuando salimos a jugar a otros estados vimos, rápidamente, qué no eramos los mejores. Entonces decidi intentar ser el mejor a nivel mundial en lo qué más me apasiona, y eso es ayudar a ganaderos a maximizar su rentabilidad y la mejora de su tierra.
He aprendido, qué cuando ayudo a alguien a mejorar su rentabilidad y maximizarla yo también aprendo y me es muy satisfactorio. Pero, no quiero qué se queden ahi, sentados en sus laureles, quiero qué busquen ser los mejores, y no sólo de su comunidad o zona geografica si no del mundo.

Y muchos me diran, es qué mi medio ambiente es muy difícil, no puedo alcanzar las ganancias de peso, la edad al primer parto, y la fertilidad a campo qué logran en latitudes más altas o a mayor altitud con pastos de mayor calidad. Y eso es cierto, si sólo consideramos el desempeño por animal, pero debemos considerar la rentabilidad por hectárea! Esa es la qué cuenta, y aún más alla la rentabilidad o retorno sobre lo invertido. Esto, cualquiera lo entiende.

En eso, en la rentabilidad por hectare o retorno de lo invertido, es dónde el programa de pastoreo total brilla sobre los demas programas o estilos de pastoreo.

Qué se necesita para duplicar la carga animal sobre cualquier estilo de pastoreo selectivo en rotación? El pastoreo rotacional selectivo logra una avance o mejora respecto al pastoreo continuo o convencional, si pero se puede mejorar mucho el resultado si avanzamos a la siguiente etapa; el programa de pastoreo total.

En el programa de pastoreo total empezamos por saber cómo es qué realmente se crea la materia organica de larga vida en nuestro suelo.

La materia organica de larga vida se crea por un exudado, un liquido alto en energía qué la planta regresa al suelo por sus raíces para alimentar la vida del suelo. Luego, estos microbios del suelo alimentados por ese liquido alto en energía qué les da la planta vuelven los nutrientes del suelo disponibles para la planta. Hasta aquí todo bien, ya sabemos entonces qué está importantisima materia organica de larga vida se crea con los cuerpos de estos microbios del suelo, hasta el 80% de esa materia organica de larga vida se crea de está manera y NO por los residuos vegetales cómo se creia hasta hace unos 9 anios.

Entonces podriamos creer qué con un pastoreo rotacional podremos aumentar el contenido de materia organica de larga vida? Desgraciadamente no, con un pastoreo rotacional sólo crearemos materia organico de corta vida, qué dura unos meses o anios pero no dura hasta 100 anios en el suelo cómo la materia organica de larga vida.

Para formar materia organica de larga vida se necesita qué estos microbios del suelo estén gordos, si gordos, y eso sólo sucede cuando los exudados regresados por las raíces del pasto al suelo son grasos en lugar de azucarados.

Interesante, no?

Bueno, cuando se crean exudados grasos en tus pastos?

Sólo cuando los difieres para usarlos cómo heno en pie en la época seca o fría del año!

Esa es una de las grandes diferencias del programa de pastoreo total con otros sistemas de pastoreo, el Voisin, el rotacional, el AMP, el de manejo intensivo del pastoreo, etcetera, todos estos sistemas con diversos nombres hacen lo mismo: un pastoreo selectivo.

Ahora, a lo más importante.

Cómo es qué normalmente aumentamos al doble la cantidad de animales productivos el primer año comparado con un sistema de pastoreo selectivo rotacional?

Por la alta eficiencia de cosecha al pastorear pasto qué se ha recuperado lo suficiente.

Si, en el mundo sólo hay dos estilos de pastoreo: el no selectivo y el selectivo.

Y el pastoreo selectivo logra una mucho menor eficiencia de cosecha, verdad?

Supongamos qué bajo un sistema de pastoreo rotacional selectivo has logrado duplicar tu carga animal respecto al pero sistema de pastoreo en el mundo, el pastoreo continuo convencional. Ahora, si quieres volver a duplicar el número de animales productivos en tu finca, mantenidos a bajo costo pon mucha atencion.

Gracias a la mayor eficiencia de cosecha de un pastoreo no selectivo en plantas recuperadas lo suficiente podemos aumentar la carga animal de manera rapida, o podemos ahorrar en heno o ensilaje inmediatamente, la decision la toma cada dueno de su finca.

Entonces, resumiendo; en el programa de pastoreo total podemos duplicar la carga animal de tu finca, comparado con un sistema de pastoreo rotacional selectivo, podemos crear más materia organica de larga vida en tu suelo, está es la verdadera fertilidad de los suelos y dura hasta 100 anios en el suelo.

También es importante senalar qué esto lo logramos a muy bajo costo, esencialmente con manejo adecuado, y sin demasiado trabajo pues me gusta hacer las cosas sencillas y de la manera más eficiente possible.

Ahora, si estás haciendo pastoreo continuo o convencional te interesara saber qué normalmente podemos aumentar la carga animal 2 a 3 veces de manera rapida y cuatro veces en unos 3-4 anios dependiendo de tu ambient.

En zonas aridas, la mejora es todavia mayor, hasta 10-15 veces más carga animal, pero tarda un poco más dependiendo de las lluvias de cada año las cuáles varian mucho en zonas aridas y semi aridas.
Y cómo tarda un poco construir la infraestructura mínima y flexible, por el tamano de una finca en zona arida o semi arida, el avance no seria tan rápido cómo si ya estuviera la infraestructura si tuviera un sistema de pastoreo ya instalado. Es mucho más fácil empezar con un sistema de pastore ya instalado y solamente implementar el programa de pastoreo total para empezar a aumentar la carga animal, ahorrar en heno suplemento o ensilaje, y mejorar mucho más rápido el suelo con mayor creacion de materia organica de larga vida la cual es la verdadera fertilidad de nuestros suelos.
