In the last blog, I talked about what it takes to double your stocking rate again compared to a selective rotational grazing style, which was already double the stocking rate over continuous or conventional grazing.

But why is it that in a selective and continuous rotational grazing system, they cannot achieve what we achieve in the total grazing program?

Mainly for two reasons:

In the total grazing program, we achieved greater harvest efficiency in adequately recovered pastures and;

We also managed to increase the % of long-lived organic matter, which greatly increases the productivity of the grass and its quality.

Now let's see the beauty of the results achieved with the total grazing program:

1. You will be able to minimize overgrazing. What is overgrazing and why is it so important to avoid it? Overgrazing is when a plant is grazed before it has recovered properly and is what weakens it as it shortens its roots and allows other less desirable or invasive species to take over the field. Overgrazing greatly reduces the productivity and permanence of your desirable grass species.
2. Your fields will look and produce as if you fertilized them. By increasing the % of long-life organic matter, which lasts up to 100 years, it is as if you were fertilizing because this long-life organic matter releases nutrients on demand directly to your pastures and forages, thus increasing their quality and resistance to being digested by pest insects. While your neighbors will have pests, your strong grasses with fat roots will not.
3.  In the green season your livestock will have the highest quality pastures and forage at their disposal for their best performance. It is in the green season when they should have very good weight gain, high field fertility, and good weaning weights.
4. In the dry or cold season you will have enough standing hay to maintain a much larger number of cattle in good body condition at a very low cost. The savings per cow per year compared to feeding hay is $200 to $300 per year. This savings is no small thing.
5. Your pastures and soil will be improving year after year without fertilizers, this ensures current and future profitability.
6. Your cattle will be in good health and body condition if you implement the total grazing program. My motto is chubby cows, chubby cows, chubby cows. Not obese but in very good body condition.
7. Your profitability, the money you will have left to take home, will increase exponentially.
8. You will have peace of mind and satisfaction when you see your fields of hay standing where your livestock will graze in the difficult season, the dry season, or the cold season, without having to worry about getting hay or pasture when everyone is in trouble in a drought.
9. At the end of a drought your pastures will resprout with greater vigor because you have minimized overgrazing, which under other grazing programs results in overgrazing in a drought.
10. By learning a little about how the rumen works, your cattle will have better health, performance, and feed conversion. That is, you will be able to convert each ton of grass you produce into more kilos of salable products.
11. You will also begin to see more wildlife on your farm, by differentiating pastures such as standing hay, the wildlife will be able to have a place to take refuge, they will have better quality food, and will be able to reproduce. All this leads to greater resilience on your farm because each species that we increase will bring with it another 7 new species.
12. The water that comes out of your farm will be cleaner because it is filtered by long-lived organic matter.
13.  This long-lived organic matter in your soil will also retain more water, so your grasses will begin to behave as if it were raining more and the leaves of your grasses will be larger and more efficient in producing energy through photosynthesis.
14.  You will begin to have better species of grasses due to the greater amount of water and greater fertility in your soils, species that need more rain and fertility to thrive.
15.  The seedlings of your best species will be able to germinate and establish themselves in the areas that differ because there the livestock will not return in rotation to uproot them, as would happen in a selective rotational grazing system.
16. You will be able to see your livestock, one by one, every day and you will have a closer relationship with them, this will help you in the early detection of any problem or disease. Prevention is the best cure.
17. You will have more free time, with the total grazing program and free weekends to enjoy life with your family.
18. You will help the environment in your area by capturing more water in your soils, water that our soils have currently lost by ending long-lived organic matter. That water that is in the air like vapor and makes it more muggy now than it was 40 or 50 years ago.
19. Your work and that of your assistants will be simplified when you install the minimal, flexible, and low-cost infrastructure of the Total Grazing Program. No more many small permanent pastures, each with its water source, which is very expensive to implement and reduces flexibility when your number of livestock increases considerably.
20. In the case of extreme drought, you can plan in advance what to do in a very simple way. No more complicated grazing graphs!

En el blog pasado hable sobre lo qué se necesita para duplicar otra vez tu carga animal comparado con un estilo de pastoreo rotacional selectivo, el cual ya era del doble de carga animal sobre el pastoreo continuo o convencional.

Pero, porque es qué en un sistema de pastoreo rotacional selectivo y continuo no pueden lograr lo qué logramos en el programa de pastoreo total?
Principalmente por dos razones:

En el programa de pastoreo total logramos mayor eficiencia de cosecha en pastos adecuadamente recuperados y También logramos aumentar el % de materia organica de larga vida, lo qué aumenta en mucho la productividad del pasto y su calidad.

Ahora veamos la belleza de los resultados qué se logran con el programa de pastoreo total:

1.  Lograras minimizar el sobre pastoreo. Qué es el sobre pastoreo y porque es tan importante evitarlo? El sobre pastoreo es cuando se pastorea una planta antes de qué se recupere adecuadamente, y es lo qué la debilita pues acorta sus raíces y permite a otras especies menos deseables o invasivas aduenarse del campo. El sobrepastoreo reduce muchisimo la productividad y permanencia de tus especies de pastos deseables.
2. Tus campos se veran y produciran cómo si los fertilizaras. Al aumentar el % de materia organica de larga vida, qué dura hasta 100 anios, es cómo si fertilizaras pues está materia organica de larga vida libera nutrientes bajo demanda directamente a tus pastos y forrajes aumentando así su calidad y resistencia a ser digeridos por insectos plaga. Mientras tus vecinos tendrán plagas, tus pastos fuertes con raíces gordas no las tendran
3. En la época verde tu ganado tendrá a su disposicion pastos y forrajes de la mayor calidad para su mejor desempeño. Es en la época verde cuando deben de tener muy buena ganancia de peso, alta fertilidad a campo y buenos pesos al destete.
4. En la época seca o fría tendrás el suficiente heno en pie para mantener un mucho mayor número de ganado en buena condición corporal a muy bajo costo. El ahorro por vaca por año comparado con alimentar heno es de 200 a 300 dólares por año. No es poca cosa esté ahorro.
5. Tus pastos y suelo estarán mejorando año con año sin fertilizantes, esto te asegura la rentabilidad actual y futura.
6. Tu ganado estará en buena salud y condición corporal si implementas el programa de pastoreo total. Mi lema es vacas gorditas, vacas gorditas, vacas gorditas. No obesas si no en muy buena condición corporal.
7. Tu rentabilidad, el dinero qué te va a quedar para llevar a casa, aumentara de manera exponencial.
8. Tendrás paz mental y satisfaccion al ver tus campos de heno en pie en dónde pastara tu ganado en la época difícil, la época seca o la época fría, sin tener de preocuparte en conseguir heno o pastos cuando todos están en apuros en una sequía.
9. Al terminar una sequía tus pastos rebrotaran con mayor vigor por haber minimizado el sobre pastoreo, lo cual bajo otros programas de pastoreo selectivo caen en sobrepastoreo en una sequía.
10. Al aprender un poco sobre cómo funciona el rumen, tu ganado tendrá mejor salud, desempeño y conversión alimenticia. Esto es, podrás convertir a más kilos de productos vendibles cada tonelada de pasto qué produzcas.
11. También vas a empezar a ver más vida silvestre en tu finca, al diferir potreros cómo heno en pie, la fauna silvestre podra tener un lugar para refugiarse, tendrán mejor calidad de alimento y podrán reproducirse. Todo esto lleva a mayor resiliencia en tu finca pues cada especie qué aumentemos traera consigo otras 7 especies nuevas.
12. El agua qué salga de tu finca será más limpia por ser filtrada por materia organica de larga vida.
13. Está materia organica de larga vida en tus suelos también retendra más agua por lo qué tus pastos empezaran a comportarse cómo si lloviera más y las hojas de tus pastos serán más grandes y eficientes en producir energa por fotosíntesis.
14. Empezaras a tener mejores especies de pastos por esa mayor cantidad de agua y mayor fertilidad en tus suelos, especies qué necesitan de más lluvia y fertilidad para prosperar.
15. Las plantulas de tus mejores especies podrán germinar y establecerse en las areas qué difieras pues ahi no regresara el ganado en rotación a arrancarlas de raiz cómo pasaría en un sistema de pastoreo rotacional selectivo.
16. Podrás ver tu ganado, uno por uno, cada día y tendrás una relación más cercana con ellos, esto te ayudara en la deteccion temprana de cualquier problema o enfermedad. La prevencion es la mejor cura.
17. Tendrás más tiempo libre, con el programa de pastoreo total y los fines de semana libres para gozar de la vida con tu familia.
18. Ayudaras al medio ambiente de tu zona al capturar más agua en tus suelos, agua qué actualmente nuestros suelos han perdido al acabar con la materia organica de larga vida. Esa agua qué está en el aire cómo vapor y hace qué ahora esté más bochornoso qué hace 40 o 50 anios.
19. Tu trabajo y el de tus ayudantes será simplificado cuando instales la infraestructura mínima y flexible, y de bajo costo del Programa de Pastoreo Total. Ya no más muchisimos potreros permanentes y pequeños cada uno con su fuente de agua lo cual es carisimo de implantar y reduce la flexibilidad cuando tu número de ganado aumenta considerablemente.
20.  En el caso de sequía extrema podrás planear con anticipacion qué hacer de una manera muy sencilla. Ya no más graficas complicadas de pastoreo!
