#161 What Happens When You Stop Overgrazing and Let the Soil Breathe | Qué pasa cuando minimizas el sobrepastoreo y dejas qué el suelo respire?

Let’s talk about what happens when you stop overgrazing and let your soil breathe. I mean it, not just rest it occasionally, but truly change the way you graze so that nature can finally catch its breath.

Now, first, let’s define it clearly: Overgrazing is not about how long the animals stay on the pasture, it’s about how soon they come back. When animals bite off plants that haven’t recovered their energy reserves stored in roots and crowns, we’re robbing those plants of their power to regrow. The consequences are real: weaker grasses, fewer roots, poor soil life, and brush or weed encroachment that steals more from your productivity every season.

Here’s a hard truth: overgrazing is the leading cause of desertification around the world. That’s no small thing. It’s also the main reason we see brush take over pastures or forests reclaiming once-productive grazing lands.

But then comes the paradigm shift: what if I told you that you could run more livestock per acre, not fewer, while also healing your soil, increasing biodiversity, and building long-lived fertility, just by changing how you graze?

Most of us were taught that if land is degrading, we need to rest it longer or stock fewer animals. But that’s only a half-truth. We actually need more animals, but in a way that mimics how nature used to function before we interfered.

Before man showed up, millions of large grazing animals roamed in tightly packed herds, constantly moving, never returning to the same patch until it had fully recovered. They grazed everything, not just the best bites and their hooves stimulated the soil. That’s the pattern we aim to mimic with the Total Grazing Program.

Now, I get it. This may go against everything you’ve been told. But trust me, I’ve been there too. Now imagine what that means:
🌾 You can now stockpile grass as standing hay instead of cutting or buying it.
💰 That alone can save you $300 per cow, every single year.
🌱 You can start growing the right species in your poorest paddocks, just by grazing differently.
🌧️ You’ll capture more rainfall, deep in your soil, turning a 10-inch rainfall into 10 inches used.

Here’s something you can do today: take a long screwdriver and go to your pasture. Push it into the ground. Around 3 to 5 inches down, you’ll probably hit a hard layer — that’s compaction. That’s your invisible enemy. And that compaction? It exists because your forage roots are too shallow. And shallow roots come from selective grazing, letting animals cherry-pick the best plants over and over again.

When that happens, it’s not just your grass that suffers. Your profits shrink too.

Selective grazing might seem harmless, even natural, but over time, it can lead to overgrazing. And overgrazing creates compaction. Compaction blocks water, stunts root growth, and increases drought susceptibility. It’s all connected.

I’m not saying this to make you feel bad, quite the opposite. I want you to feel empowered, because once you understand how everything fits together, you can make the necessary adjustments. And it’s not even hard. You just need a clear plan and the proper guidance.

• We aim to achieve the highest possible profits while enhancing our land through the grazing of our livestock.

Hablemos de lo que sucede cuando dejas de sobrepastorear y dejas que tu suelo respire. Lo digo en serio: no solo dejarlo descansar de vez en cuando, sino que realmente cambias tu forma de pastorear para que la naturaleza finalmente pueda recuperar el aliento.

Primero, definámoslo claramente: el sobrepastoreo no se trata de cuánto pasto consumen los animales en el potrero, sino de qué tan rápido regresan. Cuando el ganado consume las plantas que no han recuperado sus reservas de energía almacenadas en raíces y macollos, les estamos robando la capacidad de rebrotar. Las consecuencias son reales: pastos más débiles, menos raíces, pobre vida del suelo y maleza o invasión de arbustos que reducen aún más su productividad cada temporada.

He aquí una dura verdad: el sobrepastoreo es la principal causa de desertificación en todo el mundo. Y no es poca cosa. También es la principal razón por la que vemos cómo la maleza invade pastizales o que tierras de pastoreo que antes eran productivas ahora sean monte.

Pero aqui llega el cambio de paradigma: ¿qué pasaría si te dijera que puedes mantener más ganado productivo por hectarea, no menos, y al mismo tiempo sanar el suelo, aumentar la biodiversidad y lograr mayor fertilidad duradera, simplemente cambiando la forma de pastoreo?

A la mayoría nos enseñaron que si la tierra se degrada, necesitamos que descanse más tiempo o tener menos animales. Pero eso es solo una verdad a medias. En realidad, necesitamos más animales, pero de una manera que imite cómo funcionaba la naturaleza antes de la llegada del hombre.

Antes de la llegada del hombre, millones de grandes animales de pastoreo vagaban en manadas compactas, en constante movimiento, sin volver nunca a la misma parcela hasta que se recuperaba por completo. Pastaban de todo, no solo los mejores bocados, y sus pezuñas estimulaban el suelo. Ese es el patrón que buscamos imitar con el Programa de Pastoreo Total.

El objetivo es simple: maximizar las ganancias y regenerar la tierra lo más rápido posible.

Y lo entiendo, puede que esto contradiga todo lo que te han dicho. Pero créeme, yo también he pasado por eso. He visto cómo el conocimiento convencional les fallaba a agricultores y ganaderos año tras año, mientras que los costos del heno subían y la calidad de los pastos empeoraba. Empecé a cuestionar los métodos antiguos y encontré una mejor manera, y ahora quiero compartirla contigo.

Cuando minimizas el sobrepastoreo, tus plantas vuelven a crecer más fuertes, más rápido y con más hojas. Sus raíces son más profundas. Y eso significa que tu suelo se vuelve más vital: retiene más agua, permite la entrada de más aire y empieza a trabajar para ti en lugar de en tu contra, se vuelve esponjoso. He visto cómo la productividad de la tierra se triplica o incluso quintuplica durante la temporada de crecimiento, sin fertilizantes, sin resiembra ni maquinaria sofisticada.

Ahora imagina lo que eso significa:

🌾 Ahora puedes almacenar pasto como heno en pie, en lugar de cortarlo o comprarlo.
💰 Solo esto puede ahorrarte $300 por vaca, cada año.
🌱 Puedes empezar a tener las especies adecuadas en tus potreros más pobres, simplemente pastoreando de forma diferente.
🌧️ Captarás más agua de lluvia en profundidad, convirtiendo 25 cm de lluvia en 25 cm de aprovechamiento en tus suelos.

Aquí tienes algo que puedes hacer hoy: toma un destornillador largo y ve a tu pastizal. Introdúcelo en la tierra. A unos 7,5 a 13 cm de profundidad, probablemente encontrarás una capa dura: una capa compactada. 

Ese es tu enemigo invisible. ¿Y esa compactación? Existe porque las raíces de tu forraje son demasiado superficiales. Y las raíces superficiales provienen del pastoreo selectivo: dejar que los animales cosechen las mejores plantas una y otra vez.

Cuando eso sucede, no solo tu pasto sufre. Tus ganancias también se reducen. El pastoreo selectivo puede parecer inofensivo, incluso natural, pero con el tiempo puede conducir al sobrepastoreo. 

Y el sobrepastoreo crea compactación. La compactación bloquea la entrada del agua, impide el crecimiento de las raíces y aumenta la susceptibilidad a la sequía. Todo está conectado.

No digo esto para que te sientas mal, todo lo contrario. Quiero que te sientas empoderado, porque una vez que entiendas cómo encaja todo, podrás hacer los ajustes necesarios. Y no es difícil. Solo necesitas un plan claro y la orientación adecuada.

Nos educaron mal. Sin embargo, ahora tenemos la oportunidad de mejorar. Abre tu mente, como dijo Einstein: «La mente es como un paracaídas: solo funciona cuando está abierta».

Conclusión y resumen

• El sobrepastoreo, el re pastoreo de forrajes no recuperados, debilita las plantas, acorta sus raíces y crea una capa dura.
• El sobrepastoreo es la causa directa de esta capa dura, que se puede identificar simplemente introduciendo un destornillador en el suelo con la mano.
• El sobrepastoreo se debe principalmente al pastoreo selectivo.
• En cambio el  programa de pastoreo total  
• Hará que sus suelos y pastos sean resistentes a las sequías.
• Aumentará su precipitación efectiva, la cantidad de lluvia que penetra profundamente en el suelo y permanece allí.
• Personas bienintencionadas nos han enseñado, pero se equivocaron. Podemos mejorar adoptando los buenos conocimientos y descartando las teorías o paradigmas erróneos.
• Nuestro objetivo es obtener las mayores ganancias posibles mientras mejoramos nuestras tierras mediante el pastoreo correcto de nuestro ganado.
