#162 Why Some Pasture Heal Better than Others | Por qué algunos potreros se regeneran más rápido que otros

Today, I am going to talk about why some pastures heal faster than others.

Have you ever observed, when regenerating your land, that some pastures simply do better than others? It may begin with greener and larger grass growth near manure patties, and then this greener, higher growth of grass starts to spread across your pastures.

I was in New Zealand with Andy Bunny, the owner of a large farm in the North Island, and he asked: Why is the grass much taller and greener where there are manure patties in the pasture?

The usual response would be something like this: Oh, it is due to the nutrients in the manure, but I pointed out that near the trees close to where we were, all the grass was taller and with much higher production than out in the pasture, next I pointed out that the taller and higher output from the green spots was spreading out across the pasture.

I recalled my own experience with this exciting question because if we could increase production across every square yard of the paddock to resemble what we were observing near manure patties, the already high stocking rate he had could be increased 5 times!

Back in Katy, TX, when I was managing grazing properties, I noticed the same bright green grass producing up to eight times more grass per square yard near the manure patties. Luckily, I took pictures of the whole process and will share the results with you. It's exciting because this is how nature operates!

It all starts with soil life, and soil life is restricted by overgrazing because overgrazing results in shorter roots, creates a shallow hardpan, and severely limits the growth of mycorrhizae.

You need to realize that without mycorrhizae, plant roots are limited in exploring the soil; mycorrhizae allow the plant roots to explore 30 to 100 times more of the soil surface to extract nutrients and moisture.

Back to the manure patties and greener grass, I observed that cattle avoided grazing where the manure was fresh due to the repugnance of their species' manure. This allowed the grass to grow taller and the roots to grow deeper. This did not happen before because they had been rotational selective grazing before I started regenerating the land in that property in Waller County.

So what happened when we stopped the overgrazing caused by rotational selective grazing? The mycorrazie hotspots started spreading across the pasture! Until every square foot of the pastures increased their productivity 3 to 5 times with taller, greener, higher-quality grass!

We didn’t need to spray, fertilize, or feed more hay, and we achieved this with a double stocking rate compared to selective rotational grazing, while also saving around $300 per cow per year on hay.

Now, let's go back to New Zealand, with Andy Bunny and his question.
I asked him, Why is the grass greener and taller where there is old cow manure?

And he replied, It's from the nutrients in the manure.

Okay, why is the grass taller under the trees? I don’t know, maybe because of more cow manure there?

So we went to check and there was no cow manure there. Then I pointed out how the green spots near the old manure patties were spreading, up to 10 or 20 square feet from the original manure spot.

Then I shared my experiences in Katy, TX, on my farm in the dry tropics of Mexico, as well as the farms of many of my students.

Immediately, he started putting his many herds of livestock together to minimize overgrazing on his large farm

The happy ending is that by minimizing overgrazing, he is now achieving much higher grass productivity, to the point where he needs more livestock to consume all the grass he is producing.

Wouldn’t you like that? You can achieve significantly higher grass production simply by changing your management!

It’s all about understanding how the beautiful symbiosis between grass, livestock, and soil work together. A virtuous spiral!

And it all starts with minimizing overgrazing, allowing your soil to breathe, and allowing your grass to adequately recover before grazing it. Simple, and this aligns with plant physiology: how long-lived soil carbon is built by your grass when it stockpiles, and how grazing was total before around fifty thousand years ago.

Por suerte, tomé fotos de todo el proceso y compartiré los resultados con ustedes. ¡Es emocionante porque así es como funciona la naturaleza!

Todo comienza con la vida del suelo, y esta se ve restringida por el sobrepastoreo, ya que este produce raíces más cortas, crea una capa dura poco profunda y limita gravemente el crecimiento de micorrizas.

Es importante tener en cuenta que, sin micorrizas, las raíces de las plantas tienen una capacidad limitada para explorar el suelo; las micorrizas permiten que las raíces exploren de 30 a 100 veces más superficie del suelo para extraer nutrientes y humedad.

Volviendo a las bolas de estiércol y al pasto más verde, observé que el ganado evitaba pastar donde el estiércol estaba fresco debido a la repugnancia que sentía por el estiércol de su especie. Esto permitía que el pasto creciera más alto y las raíces más profundas. Esto no ocurría antes porque habían practicado el pastoreo selectivo rotacional antes de que yo comenzara a regenerar la tierra en esa propiedad del condado de Waller.

Entonces, ¿qué sucedió cuando detuvimos el sobrepastoreo causado por el pastoreo selectivo rotacional? ¡Los focos de micorrizas comenzaron a extenderse por el pastizal! ¡Hasta que cada metro cuadrado de pastura aumentó su productividad de 3 a 5 veces con pasto más alto, más verde y de mejor calidad!

No tuvimos que asperjar herbicidas, fertilizar ni alimentar con más heno, y lo logramos con una carga animal doble en comparación con el pastoreo rotacional selectivo, además de ahorrar alrededor de $300 por vaca al año en heno.

Ahora, volvamos a Nueva Zelanda, con Andy Bunny y su pregunta.

Le pregunté: "¿Por qué el pasto es más verde y alto donde hay estiércol de vaca viejo?".

Y él respondió: "Es por los nutrientes del estiércol".

Bueno, ¿por qué el pasto es más alto debajo de los árboles? No sé, ¿quizás por la mayor cantidad de estiércol de vaca allí?".

Así que fuimos a comprobarlo y no había estiércol de vaca. Entonces señalé cómo las manchas verdes cerca de las bolas de estiércol viejo se extendían hasta 10 o 20 pies cuadrados del estiércol original.

Después compartí mis experiencias en Katy, Texas, en mi granja en el trópico seco de México, así como en las granjas de muchos de mis estudiantes.

Inmediatamente, comenzó a reunir sus numerosos rebaños para minimizar el sobrepastoreo en su extensa granja.

• Los árboles suelen tener abundante micorriza.
