#170 Why Simplicity Wins: “The Infrastructure Myth Most Ranchers Fall For”

Uncategorized Sep 16, 2025

I hear it all the time.

“Jim, I’d love to graze the way you do, but I don’t have the infrastructure.”

And by infrastructure, they usually mean: miles of cross-fencing, permanent water lines, moveable water troughs in every single paddock, big fancy corrals, and a setup that looks like a feedlot engineer designed it.

It’s almost like ranchers believe success in regenerative grazing is reserved for the folks who can write a six-figure check to the fencing company.

I get it. We’ve all been told: “If you want to graze right, you’ve got to invest in infrastructure.”

But here’s the myth I want to bust wide open today: You don’t need a complex setup to succeed in Total Grazing.

In fact, the more complicated you make it, the less likely you are to stick with it. And when you strip it down to the essentials, that’s when grazing starts working — for your livestock, your land, and your wallet.

The Trap of Complexity

When I first started down this path, I thought I needed the works: miles of cross-fence, steel posts, a water trough in every pasture, a fancy corral.
What did I end up with?

A lot of debt, a great deal of stress, and very little progress.

Because here’s the truth nobody tells you:

  • Cattle don’t need shiny fences to graze
They need grass, they need more grass
  • Soil doesn’t get better because of pipelines
It gets better because of how we manage recovery and utilization. Cattle can walk without losing performance
  • Profit doesn’t come from a bigger setup
It comes from lowering costs and increasing production

And every time I made things more complicated, I made it harder on myself. Moving cattle became stressful. Repairs ate up my time. And the costs — well, let’s just say my accountant side was not impressed.

Why Simplicity Wins

Let me give it to you straight: the ranchers who thrive long term are the ones who keep things simple.

Why? Because simplicity means:

  • Less money tied up in infrastructure
  • Less time spent repairing, checking, and stressing
  • More freedom to manage your grazing

The beauty of good grazing isn’t in the hardware. It’s in the management.

Busting the Infrastructure Myth

Here are a few simple truths that cut through the noise:

  1. You Don’t Need Permanent Fences Everywhere
I’ve seen ranches crisscrossed with permanent fences that cost a fortune — and they don’t actually improve grazing but create inflexibility. A single hot wire and a good plan will do more for your land than all the steel and posts in the world.
  2. Water Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
Does every paddock need its own permanent water line? Absolutely not. With a bit of creativity, you can set up shared water points that work just fine — without draining your bank account. Remember, our livestock have four legs; we only have two.
  3. Cows Aren’t Engineers
We sometimes forget this. They don’t care about perfectly square paddocks or laser-leveled lanes. They care about grass and trust. Overthinking design often makes it worse, not better.
  4. Management Beats Materials
I’ll say it again: grazing success isn’t about how much money you pour into infrastructure. It’s about how you move your livestock, how you manage recovery periods, and how you let grass do what it was designed to do.

 A Lesson From the Field

Let me share a quick story.

A rancher I know, let’s call him Tom, called me up frustrated. He had spent tens of thousands of dollars on permanent cross-fences and water lines. His ranch looked like a checkerboard.

But his cattle weren’t thriving. His grass still looked patchy. And he was worn out from repairing water leaks and fixing fences.

He asked me, “What am I doing wrong?”

Here’s what I told him: “Tom, the problem isn’t your land. The problem is you’re working for your infrastructure instead of letting your infrastructure work for you.”

I showed him a simpler way: using temporary fences, flexible moves, and a focus on grass recovery. I shared with him the secret of the art of jumping paddocks.

Within a year, his costs dropped, his grass improved, and his cows looked better than ever.

And the best part? He actually had time to enjoy ranching again.

Why We Fall For the Myth

So why do so many ranchers fall for the infrastructure myth?

Because complexity looks impressive.

We see a neighbor with brand-new pipe corrals, buried pipelines, and rows of permanent cross-fencing, and we think, “That’s what success looks like.”
But here’s the secret: those setups often hide a mountain of debt and a rancher chained to inflexibility and to repairs.

Success isn’t in the setup. Success is in the results: healthier soil, healthier cattle, and a fat wallet.
Those results stem from simplicity, not complexity.

What Simple Infrastructure Looks Like

I’m not going to give you the whole plan here, that’s what I teach in depth inside Ranching Made Simple (RMS) online course. But I’ll give you a taste.

  • Portable Fencing: Instead of miles of steel, you can use temporary electric fencing that moves with your herd. Cheaper, easier, and more flexible.
  • Shared Water Points: With a bit of thought, you can set up water so multiple paddocks share the same source. No need for a spigot in every square.
  • Basic Corrals: You don’t need one every 200 acres. A single well-designed and situated set will serve you far better than a dozen complicated ones.
  • Minimal Tools, Maximum Impact: A simple and narrow central livestock corridor, a good reel of polybraid, step-in posts, and a solid energizer go further than any guru-designed setup.

When you keep it simple, you spend less money, waste less time, and achieve greater productivity.

The RMS Difference

That’s why I created Ranching Made Simple.

Because too many ranchers are overwhelmed by the idea that they need to build the perfect system before they can start. And the truth is, you can start right where you are, with what you already have.

RMS is about stripping away the noise and showing you:

  • The few key pieces of infrastructure you actually need
  • How to set them up without overspending
  • How to manage cattle so the land improves year after year

It’s about giving you the confidence to ranch simply — and profitably.

Final Thoughts

The ranching world loves to complicate things. We love new gadgets, fancy setups, and “perfect” designs. But the longer I do this, the more convinced I am: simplicity wins.

When you stop falling for the infrastructure myth, you free yourself. You cut costs, you reduce stress, and you start focusing on what actually matters: your cows, your grass, and your bottom line.

Don’t let complexity rob you of progress. Keep it simple. And if you want a clear, step-by-step way to do just that, come join us inside RMS this month.

Remember, the promo ends September 30th.

Because at the end of the day, ranching isn’t about how much infrastructure you own. It’s about how much profit, peace of mind, and pride you take home.

And simplicity is the key to all three.

Thank you for being here. I couldn't have made this without you. My goal is for you to maximize your profits while improving your land at the fastest rate.

May God bless you, your family, your land, and your livestock. See you next time:)
