The Hardest Season of the Year, and Why we Finally Got Through It.

Every rancher has that one season they dread. For some, it’s the prolonged, hot droughts that seem to stretch forever. For others, it’s the bitter winters when water freezes solid, the wind cuts through every layer of clothing, and hay disappears like smoke in the wind.
For me? I’ve faced both. And I’ll be honest, there were years when I wondered if we were going to make it.
Today, I want to tell you the story of the hardest season we ever went through… and why we finally got through it. Not because we bought more hay. Not because we had a neighbor bail us out. But because we learned how to plan before the hard season hit.
And I want to be honest with you: this story is not about me pretending to be the expert who had it all figured out. This is about me being in the trenches — stressed, tired, broke, and nearly defeated — and what it felt like when I finally found a different way.
When the longest Summer drought in 60 years, Nearly Broke Us
One particular year stands out more than all the rest.
It had not rained in 11 months that year, it was the worst drought in the last 60 years and I had just received another herd of cattle which doubled the number of cows for my ranch, not out of choice, but I had to deal with it. The grass hadn’t finished its recovery period. I remember looking out over pastures that were still green but short, and thinking, We’ll make it work somehow.
After 11 months of no rain, and we were finishing our normal rainy season, I wasn’t too worried. We had stockpile or standing hay, and I figured it would last. But then the rains didn’t arrive… a month passed and another. The drought hung on week after week.
Every day with no rain felt like money evaporating into thin air.
By October, I had started feeding hay buying it at high prices and my hay bin was shrinking faster than I wanted to admit. At night, I’d sit at the kitchen table with a pencil, doing math I didn’t want to face. If the drought stretched just a few weeks longer, we’d be out of hay and it wasn’t available anymore as everybody was in the same situation.
And if you’ve ever been there, you know that knot in your stomach. Few things put more pressure on a rancher than staring at a hungry herd, no stockpile, no hay to feed them, and a bank account that doesn’t have room for more feed.
That was one of the hardest seasons of my ranching life.
The Stress That Doesn’t Show
I don’t talk about this often, but what made that season even harder was the stress nobody else could see.
Neighbors might look over the fence and see cows chewing on hay and think everything’s fine. But inside, I was exhausted.
That’s the part of ranching we don’t talk about enough: the mental load—the weight of wondering how to keep the herd fed without breaking the bank.
I can tell you right now - it nearly broke me.
The Turning Point

I realized I couldn’t keep depending on hay to save me. If I kept feeding my way out of trouble, I’d always be one storm, one drought, one market swing away from breaking.

Todo ganadero tiene esa temporada que teme. Para algunos, son las sequías prolongadas y calurosas que parecen eternas. Para otros, son los crudos inviernos cuando el agua se congela, el viento corta cada capa de tu ropa y el heno desaparece como humo en el viento.
¿Para mí? He enfrentado ambas. Y para ser sincero, hubo años en los que me pregunté si lo lograríamos.
Hoy quiero contarles la historia de la temporada más difícil que hemos vivido... y por qué finalmente la superamos. No porque hayamos comprado más heno. No porque un vecino nos rescatara. Sino porque aprendimos a planificar antes de que llegara la temporada difícil.
Y quiero ser honesto con ustedes: esta historia no se trata de que yo pretenda ser el experto que lo tenía todo resuelto. Se trata de estar en las trincheras —estresado, cansado, sin dinero y casi derrotado— y de cómo me sentí cuando finalmente encontré un camino diferente.
Cuando la sequía de verano más larga en 60 años casi nos destrozó
Un año en particular destaca por encima de todos los demás.
Ese año no había llovido en 11 meses; fue la peor sequía de los últimos 60 años, y acababa de recibir otra manada de ganado, duplicando el número de vacas de mi finca; no por decisión propia, pero tuve que lidiar con ello. El pasto no había terminado su período de recuperación. Recuerdo mirar los pastos, que aún estaban verdes pero cortos, y pensar: «De alguna manera lo haremos funcionar».
Después de 11 meses sin lluvia, y cuando estábamos terminando nuestra temporada de lluvias habitual, no estaba demasiado preocupado. Teníamos heno almacenado o en reserva, y pensé que duraría. Pero entonces no llegó la lluvia... pasó un mes y otro. La sequía se prolongó semana tras semana. Cada día sin lluvia parecía como si el dinero se evaporara en el aire.
Para octubre, empecé a alimentar con heno, comprándolo a precios altos, y mi henil se estaba reduciendo más rápido de lo que quería admitir. Por la noche, me sentaba a la mesa de la cocina con un lápiz, haciendo cálculos que no quería afrontar. Si la sequía se prolongaba unas semanas más, nos quedaríamos sin heno y ya no estaría disponible, ya que todos los ganaderos de la zona estábamos en la misma situación.
Y si alguna vez has pasado por eso, conoces ese nudo en el estómago. Pocas cosas presionan más a un ganadero que ver su rebaño hambriento, sin reservas, sin heno para alimentarlos y con una cuenta bancaria sin espacio para más alimento.
Esa fue una de las temporadas más difíciles de mi vida ganadera.
El estrés que no se notaNo hablo de esto a menudo, pero lo que hizo esa temporada aún más difícil fue el estrés que nadie más podía ver.
Los vecinos podían mirar por encima de la cerca y ver vacas masticando heno y pensar que todo estaba bien. Pero por dentro, estaba agotado.
Esa es la parte de la ganadería de la que no hablamos lo suficiente: la carga mental, el peso de preguntarse cómo mantener al rebaño alimentado sin arruinarme.
Puedo decirte ahora mismo que casi me arruina.
El punto de inflexión
Pero aquí está la cuestión: a veces las temporadas más difíciles nos obligan a enfrentar la verdad.
Me di cuenta de que no podía seguir dependiendo del heno para salvarme. Si seguía alimentándolo para salir de los problemas, siempre estaría a una tormenta, una sequía, una fluctuación del mercado de quebrar.
Necesitaba un nuevo plan. Fue entonces cuando empecé a prestar más atención a los ganaderos que no se quedaban sin pasto. Los que habían almacenado forraje, que planificaban el pastoreo pensando en la recuperación y que se las arreglaban de forma diferente.
No dependían de la suerte. No consumían heno como yo lo hacía antes. Tenían un sistema.
Y en ese momento, decidí que quería lo que ellos tenían.

Reflexiones finales
Nunca olvidaré la temporada más difícil del año: aquella en la que casi me quedo sin heno, sin dinero y sin esperanza.
Pero tampoco olvidaré el alivio que sentí al año siguiente, cuando el sistema funcionó, cuando las vacas siguieron pastando y cuando la sequía no nos destrozó.
La planificación, no el pánico, fue lo que nos ayudó a superarlo.
