#34 How to Increase Wildlife in Your Property | Como Aumentar la Fauna Silvestre

I am Jim Elizondo from Real Wealth Ranching where our goal is to maximize your profitability while you improve your land the fastest.

Today, I am eager to share with you how to increase wildlife on your farm or ranch thanks to the Total Grazing program.

Remember that in this Total Grazing program, we do not only avoid overgrazing on your land to create more humus and higher quality forage, but also set aside around half of the property to use as a stockpile for winter and dry times feeding your livestock, and of course, your wildlife!

Wildlife is an essential part of the world we live in, and we want more of them and more diversity as they are also a signal of good environmental health.

So, we must ask the question, what can we do to draw or attract more wildlife into our properties? Well, let’s start with their needs.

All living things have a life cycle and in that life cycle, there are different stages when they are most vulnerable to pests, predators, diseases, and lack of feed.

Wildlife is not an exception; they also require good quality feed at different times of the year. Feed that would disappear under selective grazing! Be it rotational or continuous, when having a high to very high stocking rate, which if you are one of my Total Grazing students you know that is what determines ranch or farm profitability, the number of productive animals your land can carry at a low cost per year!

First, let me tell you that I believe a savanna type of landscape to be the most pleasing and productive landscape possible. This means that trees are very welcome in my perspective. They also improve the environment and provide habitat for many species, above and below ground.

When doing selective rotational grazing, which I need to mention, is better than continuous grazing, but falls short of potential. We may run out of forage in a drought, this means that if our livestock is suffering from lack of feed, our wildlife can also suffer the same, right?

But under the Total Grazing program, we do not have to run out of feed due to having stockpiled forage in large areas, with absolutely no grazing, for the most part of a year and in desert areas for up to two years.

If we give it some thought we can realize how this will impact wildlife too, where they can go to those large areas and, especially the most seclusive species, can have a place to roam. But they also need feed, and more importantly, good quality feed in certain stages or seasons of the year.

Under the Total Grazing program, as my students already know, the best forage species have a chance to establish and dominate due, precisely, to those stockpiled areas with yearlong rest, depending on the environment.

This reminds me of a large ranch in the Chihuahua mountains of Mexico at high altitude where mule deer started to concentrate as they came from the neighbors' ranches in the Winter and dry season, due to some species of grass coming back and dominating. The grass name I am referring to is Eragrostis intermedia, and it stays green through the Winter at those high altitudes which makes it the only green grass available and mule deer seek it out.

Before implementing the total grazing program, the selective rotational grazing practiced meant that the cattle were allowed to select, this happens any time you try to leave a higher residual than total grazing, the livestock were looking for anything green in the Winter and dry season effectively overgrazing those species that maintained green leaves in those seasons. This caused those better species to go extinct. Now, under the total grazing program, those better species came back along with palatable brush species with deeper roots which also maintain their green leaves in the dry season and both livestock and wildlife have much better quality and abundance of feed which is like a magnet for the wildlife of the surrounding area which now is attracted to this property.

Wouldn’t you like that? To attract wildlife to your property?

Wildlife is an important component of any ranch or farm as they help build up biodiversity which brings resiliency and diverse profits to your ranch or farm.

Many times, folks will come and pay just to be able to observe these rare and special species and have a good time in a nice and productive environment!

We need to think of the whole and this includes wildlife.

In Florida, on another property, the number of whitetail deer and turkeys has increased many folds after doing this total grazing program. Quail numbers are also increasing along with predators.

Not using any chemicals on soil or livestock also helps to build up the soil life necessary for this higher quality forage that draws in wildlife. 

With the total grazing program, using adapted livestock selected with the right guidelines we will increase our soil humus content which means a much higher quality forage for all. With the long rest periods afforded by this program at high to very high stocking rates without overgrazing, we can build fat roots in the best forage species our livestock and wildlife require for health and reproduction.

I love this, we can produce much better forage at higher quantities at lower cost using our livestock at high stocking rates to improve the environment which also creates a better habitat for our wildlife!

This is how nature works, nature always strives for higher production and higher complexity, IF we allow it.

Many times, people have a mental image of how a paddock or pasture will look after a total graze, but what they do not consider is the effect this has on the rest of the property: a much longer rest period and a stockpile, in a large area, for the difficult times. This also doubles up as a haven for wildlife.

Ya sea rotacional o continuo cuando se tiene una carga ganadera de alta a muy alta, y si tú eres uno de mis estudiantes de pastoreo total, ¡tú sabes que eso es lo que determina la rentabilidad y productividad de la finca, la cantidad de animales productivos que tu tierra puede mantener a un bajo costo por año!

Primero déjame decirte que creo que un tipo de paisaje de Savannah es el paisaje más agradable y productivo posible. Esto significa que los árboles son muy bienvenidos desde mi perspectiva. También mejoran el medio ambiente y proporcionan un hábitat para muchas especies, por encima y por debajo del suelo.

Cuando se realiza pastoreo rotativo selectivo, que es necesario mencionar, es mejor que el pastoreo continuo, pero no alcanza el potencial. Es posible que nos quedemos sin forraje en una sequía, esto significa que si nuestro ganado está sufriendo por falta de alimento, nuestra fauna también puede sufrir lo mismo, ¿no?

Pero, bajo el programa de pastoreo total, no tenemos que quedarnos sin pasto debido a que hemos acumulado forraje en grandes áreas, sin pastorear, durante la mayor parte de un año y en áreas desérticas hasta dos años.

Si lo pensamos un poco, podemos darnos cuenta de cómo esto también beneficia a la fauna silvestre, dónde pueden ir a esas áreas grandes y, especialmente las especies más solitarias, pueden tener un lugar para criar. Pero también necesitan forrajes y, lo que es más importante, forrajes de buena calidad en determinadas etapas o épocas del año.

Bajo el programa de pastoreo total, como mis alumnos ya lo saben, las mejores especies forrajeras tienen la oportunidad de establecerse y dominar, debido precisamente, a esas áreas almacenadas con descanso durante todo el año, dependiendo del ambiente.

Esto me recuerda a un rancho de gran extensión en las montañas de Chihuahua de México a gran altura donde los venados bura comenzaron a concentrarse cuando venían de los ranchos de los vecinos en el invierno y la estación seca, debido a que algunas especies de pasto regresaban y dominaban. El nombre de ese pasto al que me estoy refiriendo es Eragrostis intermedia, y se mantiene verde durante el invierno en esas altitudes elevadas, lo que lo convierte en el único pasto verde disponible y el venado bura lo busca.

Antes de implementar el programa de pastoreo total, el pastoreo rotacional selectivo practicado ahí, significaba que el ganado podía seleccionar, esto sucede cada vez que intenta dejar un residuo más alto que bajo un pastoreo total, el ganado buscaba algo verde en el invierno y la estación seca. sobre pastoreando efectivamente aquellas especies que mantuvieron las hojas verdes en esas estaciones. Esto hizo que esas mejores especies se extinguieran. Es muy sencillo, bajo pastoreo selectivo el ganado selecciona las únicas plantas o especies con hojas verdes que hay en la época seca o fría ocasionando el sobre pastoreo que es cuando la planta es vuelta a ser consumida antes de que se haya recuperado totalmente y así es como desaparecen las mejores especies forrajeras. Ahora, bajo el programa de pastoreo total, esas mejores especies regresaron junto con especies de arbustos apetecibles con raíces más profundas que también mantienen sus hojas verdes en la estación seca y tanto el ganado como la vida silvestre tienen mucha mejor calidad y abundancia de alimento que actúan como un imán para la fauna silvestre de los alrededores que ahora son atraídos por la calidad del pasto en esta propiedad.

¿No te gustaría eso? ¿Poder atraer mas fauna silvestre a tu propiedad?

La fauna silvestre es un componente importante de cualquier finca, ya que ayudan a lograr la biodiversidad que aporta resiliencia y diversas ganancias a tu finca.

¡Muchas veces, la gente vendrá y pagará solo para poder observar estas especies bellas y especiales y pasar un buen rato en un ambiente agradable y productivo!

Necesitamos pensar en el todo y esto incluye la fauna silvestre.

En Florida, en otra propiedad, el número de venados cola blanca y guajolotes silvestres ha aumentado en gran medida después de implementar este programa de pastoreo total. El número de codornices también está aumentando junto con los depredadores de diferentes especies.

No usar productos químicos en el suelo o el ganado también ayuda a desarrollar la vida del suelo necesaria para este forraje de mayor calidad que atrae a la fauna silvestre.
Con el programa de pastoreo total, usando ganado adaptado seleccionado con las guias correctas, aumentaremos el contenido de humus de nuestro suelo, lo que significa un forraje de mucha más calidad para todos. Con los largos períodos de descanso que ofrece este programa a carga animal de alta a muy alta SIN sobrepastoreo, podemos crear raíces gordas en las mejores especies forrajeras que nuestro ganado y la fauna silvestre requieren para su salud y reproducción.

Me encanta esto, podemos producir mucho mejor forraje, en mayores cantidades y a menor costo utilizando nuestro ganado a cargas altas para mejorar el medio ambiente, ¡lo que también crea un mejor hábitat para nuestra fauna silvestre!

Así es como funciona la naturaleza, la naturaleza siempre se esfuerza por lograr una mayor producción y una mayor complejidad, SI lo permitimos.

Muchas veces, las personas tienen una imagen mental de cómo quedará un campo o potrero después de un pastoreo total, pero lo que no consideran es el efecto que esto tiene en el resto de la propiedad: un período de descanso mucho más largo y una reserva de pasto diferido, en una grande área de la finca, para usar en los momentos difíciles. Esta área diferida también funciona como un refugio para la fauna silvestre.
