Why do the great herds of herbivores migrate?

For a long time, I thought I knew the answer. But a chase lasts minutes. A migration can cross entire regions.

And there was something even stranger:
Although different species shared the same savanna, some would leave while others remained.

Why?

A series of observations that began for me in Tanzania in 1985 eventually opened a much larger question about diversity, food, competition, and the relationships that keep ecosystems functioning.

If they were all walking across the same savanna... why didn't they all seem to be seeing the same food?
