That simple question began for me as a teenager, standing in front of a small vegetable garden in Tampico, Mexico. The harder I worked, the more nature seemed determined to challenge what I believed I understood.
Then something unexpected happened.
A few forgotten sweet potatoes, planted with almost no effort, grew better than the carefully managed garden I had worked on for months.
That contradiction stayed with me for decades.
It followed me through university, across ranches, and eventually around the world.
This Observation is not about gardening.
It is about learning to observe.
Because every great discovery begins the moment reality refuses to agree with our assumptions.
Perhaps the greatest gift nature can give us is not an answer...
but a better question.
