"I don't have time"

Ranchers are inherently busy. Add on a family and maybe another job, and there's a good chance you're downright exhausted at the end of the day.

Most ranchers are exhausted because they are working against nature -- but here's the thing: nature never rests. You want nature to work for you, and the only way to do that is to work in harmony with nature. That way, when you go home at the end of the day, nature is still doing your work for you.

Belief #2

"All of my neighbors are conventional ranchers and it has worked for them for many years. Why change?"

The game has changed. Production costs or inputs have steadily risen in the past 30 years, while the price of a cow (or calves) has increased at a much slower pace. It made sense to subsidize a ranch operation with diesel inputs in 1985.

"It's better for the land if you don't graze it too hard"

The rest periods will be 2-5 times longer which allows the best forage species seedlings the opportunity to establish. Because of the way growth, weaning weights and feeding trials are measured, selecting for high EPD numbers leads to larger and taller animals which tend to be inefficient. These animals require extra feed and pampering to maintain productivity in a true ranch scenario. "Success depends on the price I get per weaned calf!"

Profitability is measured by stocking rate. Not by weaning weight or price/lb. By carrying more animals and reducing input costs, your cost per animal decreases and your profit per acre increases. This is the number one determining factor for profit on any ranch.
