#193 Spring Doesn’t Wait and Neither Does Your Grass

Uncategorized Feb 24, 2026

My friends… this morning I rode past a pasture that used to stress me out.
Not because it looked bad.

Because it looked good enough… but never strong.

You know the kind.

Green in spring.
Okay through early summer.
And then, somehow… always the first to fade when pressure came.

For years I blamed rain.
Then genetics.
Then fertility.
I adjusted everything I could think of.

But nothing really changed.

And if I’m honest… I didn’t say it out loud back then…

but I felt like I was working harder every year just to stay even.

Does that sound familiar to anyone?

Here’s what finally hit me.

Most of us were taught to manage grass like a machine.

Move faster when growth is fast.
Slow down when growth slows.
Watch utilization.
Watch height.
Watch numbers.

And none of that is wrong.

But something was missing.

Grass doesn’t live by numbers.

It lives by sequence.

Growth.
Recovery.
Completion.

And for years… I kept interrupting that sequence right before it mattered most.

The morning everything shifted

One spring morning I rode into a paddock I had let go longer than usual.

Honestly… it made me uncomfortable.

It wasn’t that short, bright green everyone praises.

It looked… mature.

Almost too quiet.

I remember thinking:

“Did I miss my timing?”

But when I stepped off the horse, the soil told a different story.

Soft without being muddy.
Firm without being hard.
Alive.

Later that season we had a heavy rain.

And instead of watching water run off like it used to…

I watched it disappear into the ground.

Right then I understood something I wish someone had told me years earlier:

👉 The grass had finished its work.

And when it finished… the land started working for me.

Spring is where everything begins.

Right now many of you are standing in that exact moment.

Grass waking up.
Hope rising.
Pressure building quietly in the background.

Because spring feels forgiving.

Mistakes don’t show up immediately.

They show up months later.

Those first rotations decide:

how fast recovery happens
how much forage you grow all year
how much hay you’ll need
and how calm or chaotic summer feels

But most ranchers don’t realize it until mid-season.

When you’re already chasing problems that started back when everything looked green.

Have you ever reached July and thought…

“I wish I could redo April…”?

I started seeing the same pattern everywhere.

Different states.
Different soils.
Different grass types.

Same feeling.

Good ranchers doing everything they were taught…

and still feeling like the ranch never quite caught up.

So I stopped trying to tweak grazing.

And started building a system that worked with biology instead of against it.

That’s where Total Grazing came from.

Not theory.

Observation.

Years of it.

Last year in Missouri something happened I’ll never forget.

We had producers running fescue, Bermuda, Bahia — completely different environments.

One rancher, Wes, stood up during the workshop.

He wasn’t flashy.

Just honest.

He said that after one year inside the Academy:

  • Forage production increased more than 300%.
  • His cattle held body condition through tough weather.
  • Inputs dropped.

And then he said something that stayed with me:

“I’m never going back to selective grazing again.”

It wasn’t excitement.

It was relief.

Like a weight lifted.

And today… I want you to know something important.

My friends…

Total Grazing Academy enrollment is now open.

This isn’t a trend.

It’s the most proven grazing system we’ve built — designed for real ranch conditions, not theory.

What you receive inside

Four full online courses:

  • The Total Grazing Program
  • Adapted Genetics & Selection
  • Optimal Birthing Season
  • Nutrition When Grazing

Lifetime access.

Because real ranch change doesn’t happen in a weekend.

It happens through seasons.

Let me be honest with you.

I know many of you are skeptical.

And you should be.

Ranching teaches humility fast.

Weather doesn’t care about plans.

Markets don’t wait.

But here’s what I’ve seen over and over again:

When timing aligns with biology…

The land begins to carry part of the burden.

Recovery becomes steadier.

Rainfall works harder for you.

And decisions feel less urgent.

When was the last time your ranch felt calm instead of reactive?

This isn’t just about grass.

It’s about building a ranch that doesn’t break under pressure.

It’s about cattle that stay strong without constant input.

It’s about soil that quietly compounds strength year after year.

And maybe most of all…

It’s about waking up knowing you’re moving forward.

Not just surviving another season.

If you’ve been thinking…

“This is the shift I’ve been looking for.”

Then this is your moment.

Before I go…

This morning as I rode back toward the gate, I passed that same paddock again.

Wind moving through mature grass.
Soil holding moisture deeper than it used to.

And I realized something simple:
The biggest change wasn’t intensity.

It was learning to let biology finish what it starts.

If you’re ready for that shift…
I’d be honored to guide you.

Take care, my friends.

Jim
