I hope you are having a good day and are ready to take advantage of the opportunities of this day, week, month, and year.
Today I want to talk about a transcendental topic, not only for your farm and family but also for the whole world in which we live. Something that I have been thinking of more as I see how degraded we are leaving the world we live in for the next generations.
Why is it so important to think about the world we live in? Simply because the world, as a whole, is a closed ecosystem and what we do or fail to do has an impact, for better or worse, on other human beings within this closed ecosystem.
Let's think about this a little, will my actions be important to other people on the other side of the planet? Or are the actions of those people on the other side of the planet important to me and my local ecosystem?
The more we consider this, thinking it through, we will see that planet earth forms a single ecosystem composed of all the biomes and environments in the world where what happens in a certain area affects many other areas of the planet.
We must want to help as a first step, and as a second step, we must know what to do and how to help in order to be effective. It's not just about us feeling good but actually doing something effective.
And it doesn't matter if you have a large or a small farm, even if you don't have a farm you can have an effective influence on your actions, purchases, and lifestyle decisions.
If we think about it, we will see that there are certain actions that we can take to achieve a greater impact.
1. Do not use poisons or synthetic fertilizers on our farms, patios, and inside our houses.
This is very important because we break the balance between beneficial and harmful insects, in addition to the damage caused to water, humans, our livestock, wildlife, soil microorganisms, and our pets.
We can always find alternatives to the use of poisons to control pests and even more so if we achieve a high enough nutritional quality in our products that pest insects cannot digest them because pest insects have a very simple digestive system that requires very simple molecules such as those obtained when applying synthetic fertilizers, or insecticides that kill soil life, so we must also stop using synthetic fertilizers.
Practical examples abound:
And instead of synthetic fertilizers grow more humus with good grazing practices where we can carry a very high stocking rate without overgrazing.
2. Capture carbon from the air.
We can all help in this, the fastest method of capturing carbon in the air, carbon that should be in the ground, in the form of humus, fulfilling its function of trapping and retaining water and improving the land for greater productivity is with livestock grazing.
How is this achieved?
By photosynthesis of green leaves! Green leaves produce energy by photosynthesis and thus feed microorganisms in the soil which in turn make nutrients available to plants. But did you know that when these microorganisms decompose and in the last digestion are digested by fungi, they become humus? Up to 80% of the new carbon captured by the soil comes from these bodies of tiny microorganisms digested by several generations of other microorganisms, the last being digested by fungi.
After this last digestion, it goes through an aging process called humification and then it is stable and lasts up to 100 years in the soil, by then it is called HUMUS and it is the true fertility of our soils!
You can achieve this in a large, very large, medium, or small farm. You can achieve it with any species of herbivores, you can also achieve it on your lawn at home!
Here is what to do to grow more humus on your own lawn:
All you have to do is let the grass on your lawn grow longer so that it forms fat roots, full of reserves. Then mow flush with the mower and leave the cut grass on the lawn so as not to remove the nutrients. Simple right? Well, let me tell you that the vast majority of home gardens in the USA use huge amounts of poisons, fungicides, and synthetic fertilizers. This, instead of capturing carbon and improving the fertility of those soils in those houses, degrades the soil and pollutes the groundwater. Also, if you walk barefoot on that lawn you will contaminate yourself, and let’s not mention the little ones who play in that garden!
Did you know that home lawns in the USA cover more irrigated acres than any other crop? That is the potential size of our impact, that's why we must educate ourselves.
Will the same thing happen on your farm? Do you use chemical poisons? De wormers and insecticides in your cattle? Synthetic fertilizers on your forages that are then going to be attractive to pest insects?
You see, it's good to study basic plant physiology and understand how soil and soil life work, so we can take actions that help increase soil life rather than harm it.
When grazing with livestock, the same thing happens as with the grass in your lawn, which regenerates and produces fat roots if it is allowed to grow longer between cuts or grazing, grazing that must be short to achieve good regrowth with a high amount of leaves.
Of course, with livestock, it gets a little more complicated than with grass on a lawn with a lawnmower, as livestock tend to seek the best and leave what they do not like behind if we allow them to do that behind. That is not the best thing for soil life or for grass or field productivity, nor for sequestering carbon from the air into the soil in the form of humus.
My students of the total grazing program have this very clear because they know in detail how the plant works in its photosynthesis, under herbivore grazing and how more carbon is captured from the air into the soil with a great diversity of life in the soil.

1. Stop using chemicals, poisons, and synthetic fertilizers on our farms, lawns, and inside our homes.
2. Capture carbon from the air in our soils through photosynthesis. For this, it is important to know how humus is formed, which is the stable fraction of organic matter that lasts up to 100 years. The Total Grazing Program with adapted livestock will put more carbon per acre per year into the ground than other approaches making the soil better and more productive for high-quality produce.
3. Support with your food and clothing purchases regenerative producers who are actually capturing carbon from the air in their soils in order to improve the environment.

Hoy quiero hablar de un tema trascendental, no solo para tu finca y familia, sino también para todos y el mundo en el que vivimos.
¿Porque es tan importante pensar en el mundo en el que vivimos? Sencillamente porque el mundo, en su totalidad, es un ecosistema cerrado y lo que hacemos o dejamos de hacer impacta para bien o para mal a otros dentro de este ecosistema cerrado.
¿Pensemos un poco en esto, será que mis acciones sean importantes para otras personas del otro lado del planeta? ¿O las acciones de esas personas del otro lado del planeta sean importantes para mí y mi ecosistema local?
Mientras más consideremos esto, bien informados, veremos que si pues el planeta tierra forma un solo ecosistema compuesto de todos los biomas y ambientes en el mundo en donde lo que pasa en cierta zona afecta a muchas otras zonas del planeta.
Debemos querer ayudar como primer punto, y como segundo punto debemos saber en qué y cómo ayudar para poder ser efectivos. No solo se trata de sentirnos bien sino de realmente hacer algo efectivo.
Y no importa si tienes finca grande o pequeña, incluso si no tienes finca puedes influir de manera efectiva con tus acciones y decisiones de compra y estilo de vida.
Si lo pensamos bien veremos que hay ciertas acciones que podemos tomar para lograr un mayor impacto.
1. No usar venenos ni fertilizantes sintéticos en nuestras fincas, patios y dentro de nuestras casas.
Esto es muy importante pues rompemos el balance entre insectos benéficos y perjudiciales, además del daño causado al ser humano, su ganado, agua, la fauna silvestre, los microorganismos del suelo y nuestras mascotas.
Siempre encontraremos alternativas al uso de los venenos para controlar plagas y más si logramos una calidad nutricional tan alta en nuestros productos que los insectos plaga no puedan digerirlos debido a que tienen un sistema digestivo muy simple que requiere moléculas muy simples como las que se obtienen aplicando fertilizantes sintéticos e insecticidas, por lo que también debemos de dejar de usar fertilizantes sintéticos.
Ejemplos prácticos abundan:
Bórax en polvo en las esquinas de los cuartos para controlar cucarachas
Hongos entomopatógenos para control de garrapatas
Resistencia genética para parásitos y enfermedades en nuestro ganado
Bacilos thuringensis para control de gusano medidor, falso medidor y gusano soldado
Nosema locustae, un protozoario que mata saltamontes y langostas y viene en esporas para poner en cebos que atraen a estos.
Ajo para repeler insectos y tratar animales enfermos
Extracto de Neem, extracto de pimientos, etc.
Y en cuanto a no utilizar fertilizantes sintéticos lo mejor es usar la fotosíntesis con ganado haciendo pastoreo total para fijar más carbono en el suelo en forma de humus lo cual es la verdadera fertilidad de nuestros suelos.
2. Capturar carbono del aire
Todos podemos ayudar en esto, el método más rápido de capturar carbono en el aire, carbono que debería de estar en la tierra, en forma de humus, cumpliendo su función de atrapar y retener agua y mejorar la tierra para mayor productividad.
¿Como se logra esto?
¡Por fotosíntesis de hojas verdes! Las hojas verdes producen energía por fotosíntesis y así alimentan a los microorganismos del suelo que a su vez hacen disponibles los nutrientes para las plantas. ¿Pero sabias que al descomponerse estos microorganismos y al final ser digeridos por fungí se convierten en humus? Hasta el 80% del carbono nuevo capturado por el suelo viene de estos cuerpos de microorganismos diminutos digeridos por varias generaciones de otros microorganismos siendo la última digestión por fungí.
¡Después de esta última digestión pasa por un proceso de maduración que se llama humificación y entonces ya es estable y dura hasta 100 años en el suelo, para entonces se llama HUMUS y es la verdadera fertilidad de nuestros suelos!
Esto lo puedes lograr en una finca grande, muy grande, mediana, o chica. ¡También lo puedes lograr en tu césped de tu casa!
Todo lo que tienes que hacer es dejar crecer más tiempo el pasto de tu césped para que forme raíces gordas, llenas de reservas. Entonces cortar al ras con la maquina y dejar el pasto cortado en el césped para no sustraer los nutrientes. ¿Sencillo verdad? Pues te platico que la gran mayoría de los jardines de las casas en USA utilizan cantidades exageradas de venenos, fungicidas y fertilizantes sintéticos. Esto en lugar de capturar carbono y mejorar la fertilidad de esos suelos de esas casas degeneran el suelo y contaminan el agua subterránea. ¡Además, si caminas descalzo en ese césped te vas a contaminar y ni hablar de los pequeños que jueguen en ese jardín!
¿Sabías que el césped de casa en USA cubre más hectáreas de riego que cualquier otro cultivo? De ese tamaño puede ser nuestro impacto, es por eso por lo que debemos educarnos.
Sera que en tu finca suceda lo mismo? Usas venenos químicos? ¿desparasitantes e insecticidas en tu ganado? ¿Fertilizantes sintéticos en tus pastos que van a ser entonces atractivos para los insectos plaga?
Veras, es bueno estudiar la fisiología básica de las plantas y entender cómo funciona el suelo y su vida, así podemos tomar acciones que ayuden a aumentar la vida del suelo en lugar de dañarla.
Al pastorear con ganado sucede lo mismo que con el césped, el cual se regenera y produce raíces gordas si se deja crecer más tiempo entre cortes, cortes que deben ser bajito para lograr un buen rebrote con alta cantidad de hoja.
Por supuesto que con ganado se complica un poco más que con el césped y una podadora pues el ganado tiende a buscar lo mejor y dejar detrás de su pastoreo lo peor. Eso no es lo mejor para la vida del suelo ni para la productividad de la pradera o campo, y tampoco para la captura de carbono de aire en el suelo en forma de humus
Mis estudiantes del programa de pastoreo total lo tienen muy claro pues conocen a detalle cómo funciona la planta en su fotosíntesis, bajo pastoreo de herbívoros y como se captura más carbono del aire en el suelo con una gran diversidad de vida en el suelo.
¿Te gustaría ayudar a mejorar el ambiente para todos? Es muy sencillo, y si además te ayuda a aumentar tu productividad o, aunque sea a dejar de utilizar venenos en tu césped será un ganar-ganar para todos

3. Si no tienes finca, ni césped aun así puedes ayudar con las decisiones que tomas al comprar tus alimentos tratando de apoyar la producción sin venenos y de forma regenerativa porque déjame aclararte que el producir carne y leche de manera regenerativa utilizando el programa de pastoreo total es como se captura más carbono del aire por hectárea por año.
Resumen y conclusiones para ayudar a mejorar nuestro entorno o medio ambiente
1. Dejar de usar químicos, venenos, fertilizantes sintéticos en nuestras fincas, césped y dentro de nuestras casas.
2. Capturar carbono del aire en nuestros suelos por medio de fotosíntesis. Para esto es importante saber cómo se forma el humus que es la fracción estable de la materia orgánica que dura hasta 100 años.
3. Apoyar con tus compras de alimentos y ropa a los productores regenerativos que estén en realidad capturando carbono del aire en sus suelos para así mejorar el medio ambiente.
