This is what a total graze is; a high harvest efficiency grazing or nonselective grazing on well-recovered grass and done in less than 3 days so that your livestock do not regraze the regrowth which would be overgrazing.

If you have heard about the Total Grazing Program or Real Wealth Ranching or Jim Elizondo, you may have wondered why they make such bold claims. Like, you can double your stocking rate compared to rotational grazing which was already double conventional or set stocking grazing management!

How can they state that long-lived soil organic carbon is our soil’s real fertility? And why does he claim that it is mainly created when stockpiling grasses and NOT when rotationally grazing?

First, we need to know that green leaves produce energy by photosynthesis, and stems consume energy by respiring. This means that the type of grazing will have a huge impact on how many green leaves will be created and how many stems will be left attached to the plant and continue to consume energy from the plant’s reserves which are in the crown and roots.

I met the owner of this property the very first time I taught in the USA back in 2013, immediately he grasped how important it is to reach harmony between the soil, grass, and livestock to produce more beef per acre at a lower cost.

But what does it mean that we are called to be good stewards? Stewardship refers to managing all the different parts of something, in this case, a livestock business that consists of land, livestock, people, pastures, soil microorganisms, trees, wildlife, insects, and our family.

When you are planning to double or triple your stocking rate, you need to have a well-designed simple paddock layout. To make this double rewarding you also need to make it so that you can move your livestock through your property to wherever you want without hassle.
